You are competing against everyone, not the block. A search for your trade in San Jose returns businesses from Cambrian to Alum Rock. Turning up at all depends on your Google Business Profile and on having a site that clearly states what you do and where.
The map result decides before the site does. Most local searches end in the map pack. The profile does that work, the site confirms it, and the two have to agree on name, address, and phone down to the punctuation.
A referral still checks you online. Word of mouth is strong here and it does not close the deal by itself. The neighbour gives your name, and the site decides whether that referral turns into a call.
Neighbourhood language matters more than city language. People here say Willow Glen or Japantown or Evergreen before they say San Jose. A site that names the areas you actually serve reads as local, because it is.

No, and most of the county is a short drive. San Jose is where I am based and where I know the neighbourhoods well enough to write about them without guessing.
Can you fix our Google Business Profile too?
I can tell you exactly what is wrong with it and what to change, and the free audit includes a manual checklist for it. Reading a profile properly needs a paid Google API key, so that part is done by hand rather than pretended at.
We get most work by referral. Do we need this?
Maybe not. If referrals fill your calendar, a website is a lower priority for you than for someone trying to grow, and I would rather say that than take the money. What a site does for a referral business is stop the referral from going cold when they look you up.
The guarantee
You don't pay the balance until you approve the site.
Hiring one person to build your website carries an obvious risk: you pay, and what shows up is not what you had in mind. So the money is structured so that cannot happen. A deposit starts the work. The balance is due only after you have seen the finished site and told me it's right. If you look at it and it is not what we agreed, I fix it, and you still have not paid the balance.
No annual contract on the build. The retainer, if you take it, is month to month, and cancelling it does not cost you the website. The site is yours once it is paid for, either way.
